Hello

I'm Sajil, and i like to think a lot about migration and its stories.

Born in Karachi, Pakistan, and having lived in six countries has been allowed me to see how imagined relationships are the basis upon which our sense of personhood is created. By aligning ourselves to one group or another, we choose which stories we want to be a part of. I believe this same tactic is employed when creating our larger global narratives. People go places and become a part of someone else’s story and so history is made.

Artist Statement

Sajil is a painter exploring installation, using sculpture and film alongside painting. She considers her paintings to be documentary evidence of a world that has been collectively created through the bridges and gaps in social, political, and cultural memory. Using the visual language of ornate South Asian tradition of beautification, Sajil alludes to an imagined world that explores the space in between, and how the gaps in narratives become stories in themselves.

Aside from her visual practice, Sajil works in community settings to engage groups through art. Having worked extensively with marginalised communities, Sajil is passionate about providing equitable access to arts and culture and using this a basis to form relationships. She has delivered an arts programme across schools and in community settings, reaching refugees and asylum seekers, and has developed multiple workshops that have shared new skills with a diverse range of communities. Discovering art's practical function within daily life is an epiphany that is best realised when it is shared.
